🕷️ Spiders in the UK
What is a spider?
Spiders are arachnids, not insects.
They belong to a group of animals called Arachnida, alongside creatures such as harvestmen, mites, ticks and scorpions.
One of the easiest ways to distinguish a spider from an insect is to count its legs:
🕷️ Spider = 8 legs
🐜 Insect = 6 legs
A spider's body also has two main sections:
cephalothorax — the front section, where the legs, eyes and mouthparts are attached
abdomen — the rear section, containing many of the internal organs and the structures that produce silk.
Insects normally have three main body sections: head, thorax and abdomen.
Spiders also lack antennae and wings.
👀 How many eyes does a spider have?
Many spiders have eight eyes, but this isn't true of every species.
Different spiders have different arrangements and numbers of eyes.
And having eight eyes doesn't necessarily mean having excellent eyesight!
Many web-building spiders rely heavily on vibrations rather than detailed vision.
Other spiders, particularly active hunters such as jumping spiders, have much better eyesight.
Their large forward-facing eyes allow them to judge distances when stalking and jumping towards prey.
So spider senses are adapted to how each species lives and hunts.
How many spiders live in the UK?
Britain is home to more than 650 species of spider.
Most are very small and many go completely unnoticed.
British spiders can be found almost everywhere, including:
woodlands • gardens • grasslands • heathlands • wetlands • sand dunes • caves • buildings • hedgerows • farmland
Different species have evolved to live in very different conditions.
Some spend most of their lives in webs.
Others hunt across the ground.
Some hide beneath bark.
Some live among vegetation.
Others have become extremely successful at sharing our houses and buildings.
🌿 Where do spiders live?
Spiders need places where they can find food, shelter and suitable conditions.
A garden containing different habitats can support many species.
You might find spiders:
🍂 beneath fallen leaves
🪵 underneath logs
🌳 beneath loose bark
🌸 among flowers
🌱 in long grass
🪨 underneath stones
🏠 inside sheds and buildings
🕸️ between branches and stems
Deadwood, vegetation and leaf litter are particularly useful because they also support the invertebrates spiders eat.
As with hedgehogs and oak trees, an extremely tidy environment often contains fewer places for wildlife to live.
🕸️ Do all spiders make webs?
No!
This is one of the best spider misconceptions to tackle.
Almost all spiders can produce silk, but not every spider builds a web to catch food.
Different species use different hunting strategies.
Some create elaborate orb webs.
Others create messy-looking sheet or tangle webs.
Some wait inside silk retreats.
Others actively run, stalk or jump after prey.
So:
All web-building spiders use silk, but not all spiders use silk to build prey-catching webs.
🧵 Amazing spider silk
Spider silk is an extraordinary natural material.
Spiders produce silk from structures called spinnerets, located towards the rear of the abdomen.
But silk isn't used only for catching flies.
Depending upon the species, spiders can use silk to:
build webs • protect eggs • make retreats • wrap prey • create safety lines • travel • communicate through vibrations
A jumping spider may attach a silk dragline before jumping, rather like a safety rope.
Young spiders can also use silk to disperse through the air in a behaviour known as ballooning.
So silk is essentially one of the spider's most versatile tools.
🎈 Flying spiders?
Spiders don't have wings, but tiny spiders and spiderlings can travel surprisingly long distances using ballooning.
A spider climbs to an exposed position, releases fine strands of silk and can then be carried away.
Wind and atmospheric electrical forces can contribute to this process.
The spider may eventually land far from where it started.
Ballooning helps spiders colonise new habitats.
So although spiders cannot technically fly, some can certainly travel through the air!
🕸️ How does an orb web work?
The beautiful circular web we tend to imagine when somebody says spider web is called an orb web.
The spider first creates supporting threads that form the web's framework.
Radial threads extend outwards rather like the spokes of a wheel.
A spiral of silk is then added.
Parts of the web are sticky, helping capture flying insects.
When something becomes trapped, vibrations travel through the silk and alert the spider.
The spider can then locate its prey.
An orb web is therefore simultaneously:
a trap + a sensory system + an incredible piece of natural engineering.
💧 Why are spider webs so visible on autumn mornings?
Spider webs exist throughout the year, but they become especially noticeable during cool, damp autumn mornings.
Tiny droplets of dew collect on the silk.
Normally almost invisible threads suddenly become outlined by hundreds of shining water droplets.
This doesn't mean spiders have suddenly produced thousands more webs overnight.
The weather has simply made existing webs much easier for us to see
🪰 What do spiders eat?
Most British spiders are predators.
Their prey can include:
flies • mosquitoes • midges • moths • aphids • small beetles • other spiders and invertebrates
Different species specialise in different prey.
This makes spiders an important part of natural food webs.
They help regulate populations of other invertebrates, including many creatures humans consider pests.
So that spider sitting quietly in the corner may actually be doing some free fly control.
🐦 What eats spiders?
Spiders are predators, but they're also prey.
Animals that may eat spiders include:
birds • frogs • toads • lizards • shrews • centipedes • wasps • other spiders
Some parasitic wasps have particularly fascinating relationships with spiders, using them as hosts for their young.
This means spiders occupy an important middle position in food webs.
For example:

Remove spiders and the effects can spread both up and down the food web.
🕷️ Common UK spiders
There are hundreds of species, but a few make particularly good introductions.
🕸️ Garden spider
The garden spider (Araneus diadematus) is one of Britain's most recognisable spiders.
It is also called the cross orb-weaver because pale markings on its abdomen often form a cross-like pattern.
Garden spiders construct beautiful orb webs between plants, fences and other structures.
They become particularly noticeable during late summer and autumn.
🏠 Giant house spider
The large brown spiders that suddenly sprint across floors during late summer and autumn are often giant house spiders from the Eratigena group.
Their size and speed can make them look alarming.
But the wandering spiders people see are often males searching for females.
They haven't suddenly invaded the house because autumn made them cold.
In many cases, house spiders have been living quietly in or around the building for some time.
You've simply finally noticed them.
Possibly because one has decided that 10:47pm is the ideal time to run across the carpet.
🕳️ Tube-web spiders
Some British spiders construct silken tubes in cracks and holes.
Threads radiate outwards from the entrance.
When prey touches one of these threads, the spider detects the vibration and rushes out to capture it.
Different web shapes therefore reflect different hunting strategies.
🦓 Zebra jumping spider
The tiny zebra jumping spider (Salticus scenicus) is commonly seen on walls, fences and sunny surfaces.
Its striped appearance gives it its name.
Rather than constructing a web to catch prey, it uses excellent eyesight to stalk and pounce.
Jumping spiders can leap several times their own body length.
Their large forward-facing eyes are responsible for approximately 87% of the internet deciding that this particular spider is acceptable.
🌸 Crab spiders
Crab spiders get their name from their crab-like stance and ability to move sideways.
Some species wait on flowers and vegetation to ambush visiting insects.
Rather than trapping prey in a web, they rely on camouflage and patience.
🥚 The spider life cycle
A spider begins life inside an egg.
Female spiders usually protect their eggs within a silk egg sac.
Depending upon the species, the female might:
hide the sac • attach it to vegetation • guard it • carry it with her
The young that emerge are called spiderlings.
Spiderlings resemble tiny adults but must grow considerably.
🕷️ How does a spider grow?
A spider's skeleton is on the outside of its body.
This is called an exoskeleton.
Unlike our skin, an exoskeleton cannot simply stretch indefinitely as the animal grows.
The spider therefore has to shed its old exoskeleton.
This process is called moulting.
A new, larger exoskeleton forms and eventually hardens.
Spiders moult repeatedly while growing.
Finding an abandoned spider skin can therefore look rather alarming because it resembles an entire spider!
❤️ Spider courtship
For a male spider, approaching a female can be dangerous.
He needs to communicate:
Hello. I am another spider looking for a mate.
rather than:
Hello. I am dinner.
Different species have evolved elaborate courtship behaviours.
These can include:
vibrations • tapping • movements • visual displays
Male web-building spiders may create distinctive vibrations through a female's web.
Jumping spiders can perform complex visual courtship displays.
These behaviours help spiders recognise appropriate mates and reduce the chance of being mistaken for prey.
🍂 Why do we see more spiders in September?
Several things are happening.
Many spiders have spent months growing and are now larger adults.
Orb-weavers have constructed large, conspicuous webs.
Cool damp mornings cover webs with visible dew.
And adult male house spiders begin wandering in search of females.
So the popular idea that “all the spiders come inside because it's getting cold” is misleading.
Some of the enormous spiders running through British houses in autumn are there because it's essentially spider dating season.
❄️ Where do spiders go in winter?
Different species survive winter in different ways.
Some adults die after reproducing, leaving eggs to survive until conditions improve.
Others overwinter as juveniles or adults in protected places.
They may shelter:
beneath bark • within leaf litter • inside buildings • under stones • among vegetation
Their activity usually decreases in colder conditions.
So spiders haven't vanished.
Many are simply much less visible.
⚠️ Are UK spiders dangerous?
For the overwhelming majority of encounters: no.
British spiders generally have absolutely no interest in attacking humans.
Most species either cannot effectively bite through human skin or are extremely unlikely to do so.
A small number can bite if trapped, handled or threatened, but serious consequences from native British spiders are very uncommon.
Spiders use venom primarily to subdue prey, not to hunt humans.
We are enormous, unsuitable food items.
A spider running across your floor isn't charging at you.
It is usually trying to get somewhere else.
Possibly very quickly.
🕷️ What about false widow spiders?
The term false widow describes several spiders in the genus Steatoda.
The noble false widow (Steatoda nobilis) isn't originally native to Britain but has become established, particularly in southern parts of the country, and its range has expanded.
False widows receive considerable media attention because they are capable of biting.
However, bites remain relatively uncommon, and spiders don't deliberately seek people out to bite them.
The sensible approach is neither:
“THE DEADLY SPIDERS ARE COMING!”
nor
“They can never bite anyone.”
Instead:
Some UK spiders are capable of biting, but spiders generally avoid humans and serious spider bites in Britain are uncommon.
That's much better science.
🚫 Spider myths
Spiders attract an extraordinary number of misconceptions.
❌ “Spiders are insects.”
Fact: They're arachnids.
❌ “All spiders build webs.”
Fact: Almost all produce silk, but many actively hunt prey instead of trapping it in a web.
❌ “Spiders come indoors in autumn because they're cold.”
Fact: Many large house spiders become visible because mature males are wandering in search of mates.
❌ “All spiders have eight eyes.”
Fact: Many do, but eye number varies.
❌ “Spiders want to bite people.”
Fact: Humans aren't prey. Biting is generally defensive.
❌ “Daddy longlegs are the world's most venomous spiders but can't bite humans.”
Fact: This famous claim is a myth — and daddy longlegs is confusingly used for several completely different animals, including harvestmen, which aren't spiders at all.
🦵 Spider or harvestman?
Harvestmen are arachnids, but they aren't spiders.
They belong to a different group called Opiliones.
A spider visibly has two main body regions.
A harvestman's body appears much more like one fused oval structure, often sitting on extraordinarily long legs.
Harvestmen also don't produce spider silk and don't possess the venom-delivering fangs of true spiders.
So:
🕷️ Spider ≠ harvestman
Even if everyone in the playground calls both of them daddy longlegs.
🌿 Why are spiders important?
It's very easy to focus on whether somebody likes spiders.
Ecologically, that's irrelevant.
Spiders are important because they:
control invertebrate populations • provide food for other animals • contribute to food webs • form part of healthy ecosystems
They're also fascinating subjects for scientific research.
Spider silk has inspired research into strong lightweight materials, while venom chemistry and spider locomotion are also studied by scientists.
A spider web is essentially a beautiful little piece of biological engineering.
🌱 How can we help spiders?
Helping spiders doesn't require filling the bedroom with them.
Outdoor habitats can be improved by:
growing varied plants • allowing some grass to grow longer • retaining leaf litter • creating log piles • avoiding unnecessary pesticides • planting flowers that support insects • protecting hedgerows and natural vegetation
Because spiders eat other invertebrates, supporting a healthy insect population indirectly supports spiders too.
📜 Spiders in British history and folklore
Spiders have occupied a strange position in human culture.
People have associated them with:
patience • creativity • fate • weaving • luck • money • mystery • fear
The obvious reason is their extraordinary ability to create webs.
A spider seems to produce a complex structure almost from nothing, so cultures around the world have connected spiders with weaving, creation and destiny.
👑 Robert the Bruce and the spider
One of Britain's most famous spider stories is associated with Robert the Bruce, King of Scots.
According to the familiar legend, Bruce was hiding after suffering military defeats when he watched a spider repeatedly attempting to construct or reach its web.
The spider failed several times but kept trying until it succeeded.
Inspired by its persistence, Bruce supposedly resolved to try again.
The story gave rise to the message:
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
It's a lovely story about perseverance and resilience.
However, it should be labelled legend rather than established historical fact. Versions of the spider story have been attached to different historical figures, and the familiar Bruce version became popular long after his lifetime.
💰 Money spiders
Britain has a particularly charming spider superstition involving tiny spiders commonly called money spiders.
The name is often applied to small spiders from the family Linyphiidae.
Traditional superstition says that if a tiny spider crawls on you, it may bring money or good fortune.
Some versions suggest the spider is spinning you new clothes or bringing prosperity.
Hence:
🕷️ Tiny spider appears
💰 Apparently you're rich now.
🕸️ Spiders and weaving
Because spiders create silk and elaborate webs, folklore often connects them with:
weaving • creativity • patience • planning • interconnectedness
A web begins with individual threads but becomes a much larger structure.
Modern symbolic interpretations therefore sometimes use the spider or web to represent how:
actions connect • relationships form networks • small things contribute to something larger
Again, these are symbolic interpretations, not properties scientifically possessed by spiders.
🧹 Spiders and the home
Old European and British traditions contain numerous contradictory spider superstitions.
In some traditions, finding a spider inside the home was considered lucky.
Killing one could therefore be considered unlucky.
Other beliefs connected spiders with changes in weather, money or visitors.
The details vary enormously by place and period, which itself is an interesting lesson:
Folklore doesn't always have one correct version.
Stories change as people pass them between families, communities and generations.
🧙 Spiders, witches and superstition
Like many nocturnal or misunderstood animals, spiders became associated with witchcraft and magic in European folklore.
Their hidden lifestyles, venom and ability to create webs contributed to an image of something mysterious or potentially sinister.
Spiders consequently appear in later magical imagery alongside:
cauldrons • cobwebs • dark rooms • witches • abandoned buildings
But there's an important distinction.
The modern Halloween image of the witch surrounded by enormous black spiders and cobwebs is a mixture of folklore, Gothic imagery and popular culture.
It shouldn't automatically be treated as an accurate representation of historical witchcraft practices.
✨ Spiders in modern magical symbolism
In contemporary witchcraft and nature-based spirituality, spiders may symbolically represent:
creativity • patience • manifestation • fate • feminine energy • protection • shadow work • interconnectedness
The web can represent connections and the consequences of our actions.
The spider's patience while waiting for prey can represent timing and observation.
Its ability to produce silk and construct something complex can represent creativity and making.
And because a damaged orb web can be repaired or rebuilt, spiders may also symbolise resilience.
🕸️ The spider web as a magical symbol
The structure of a web makes it particularly powerful symbolically.
Everything is connected.
A movement in one place sends vibrations elsewhere.
That has inspired modern interpretations involving:
connection • cause and effect • community • fate • life's pathways
There is a lovely ecological truth sitting underneath the symbolism too.
In a real ecosystem, everything is connected.
Remove insects and spiders lose food.
Remove spiders and their predators lose prey.
Remove plants and many insects disappear.
So the magical image of an interconnected web happens to provide a rather wonderful metaphor for a scientifically real food web.
🍂 Spiders and autumn folklore
Spiders now have an especially strong cultural association with autumn and Halloween.
Part of that association has a very practical explanation.
We genuinely see more obvious spider activity during late summer and autumn.
Large adults, wandering males and dew-covered webs all become conspicuous at exactly the time that nights lengthen and Halloween approaches.
Human storytelling then adds:

🌙 darkness
🕷️ spiders
🧙 witches
🎃 Halloween
So a real seasonal wildlife event and centuries of cultural imagery have become intertwined.
