What is a squirrel?
Squirrels are mammals and belong to the rodent family Sciuridae.
In the UK, the two squirrel species people are most likely to talk about are:
Red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris)
and
Grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)
They may look similar at first glance, but their histories in Britain are very different.
Red squirrels are native to the UK.
Grey squirrels were introduced from North America during the 19th century.

Because the disease can spread between squirrels, conservation organisations sometimes restrict feeding or access during outbreaks.
This is an important lesson that well-meaning human actions can sometimes accidentally make disease transmission worse.
Feeding stations that attract many animals into one small area can increase contact between individuals.
⚠️ Why are grey squirrels called invasive?
Grey squirrels are classed as a non-native invasive species in Britain.
That does not mean an individual grey squirrel is behaving badly.
It simply means humans introduced the species to a place where it didn't naturally occur, and its presence has had significant ecological effects.

An invasive species isn't “evil”.
It is a species living outside its natural range that causes ecological, economic or environmental problems.
